Salthill will be awash with traditional racing currachs and rowers on May 6th and May 7th as the historical An Tóstal Salthill Festival comes back to our shores for the first time in ten years.  And it marks the 70th anniversary of this maritime celebration, as Ladies beach comes alive once again with the best of currach racing, coastal customs, traditions, music, and dancing.

The foundation for this gathering was laid out in the early 1950s, as Tóstal na Gaillimhe of 1953 marked the beginning of the All-Ireland Currach Racing Championships. Dignitaries and thousands of spectators gathered to witness the rowers compete for championship glory.

For 2023, the two-day gathering will include not only the thrilling races on the water, but also a host of activities and entertainment on shore. Galway Bay promises to be a spectacle of red sails, as the iconic Galway Hooker fleet – along with other local sailing clubs – also take to the water.

As the Salthill community sets sail for the summer season, sight are firmly set on the upcoming national five-a-side tournament, The Salthill Fives, taking place on June 3rd and 4th. After a seven year break, there are celebrations at the return of this Salthill institution, with renewed energy, new sponsors and a focus on health, wellbeing and family fun.

The awarding of the prestigious Purple Flag, in recognition of creating a safe and thriving location after dark, has secured Salthill’s place as the destination of choice for young and old alike.

With a host of delicious eateries, from cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels to the leisurely pursuits offered by Seapoint, Leisureland and the Galway Atlantaquaria, Salthill is the perfect setting for all the family.

Salthill’s latest ‘evening offering’ is the wine bar at Pear Tree Cafe Bistro located in the Nest. Salthill has it all.
