Galway Gigs for Friday, March 24: Traditional Irish Music, Bollywood Night, Stand-up Comedy and More!

That Friday Feeling
It’s hard to believe we were standing on the streets just one week ago for the vibrant and colourful St Patrick’s Day Parade. It’s harder again to believe that the rain stayed away for that glorious morning. It bucketed down later of course, but it wouldn’t be St Patrick’s Day without a bit of stomping through puddles.
Now, we are looking forward to another epic Friday night in Galway city. Looking for ideas? You won’t be short of options. From Monroe’s Tavern’s West Sessions Trad Music, to the first ever Bollywood Night at Monroe’s Live with DJ Darshan, from The Junior B’s playing at The Cellar Bar, to an Indian language stand-up comedy show with Harsh Gujral’s at the Róisín Dubh, there is a feast of entertainment on offer. Not only that, but Mario Rosenstock’s Gift Grub is in town. Get ready for the weekend here with us at Scene in Galway.

An Taibhdhearc
8pm: Wáltsáil Abhaile: a surreal play about the life of the great Irish actor, director and theatre impressario Micheál Mac Liammoir.
On a dark night, an aging Mac Liammoir stops for a ‘small pleasure.’ He is denied by a young Garda who safeguards him home… but there’s a storm coming. Presented as a theatrical multimedia fantasia, ‘Mac,’ in the autumn of his years, goes on a dreamlike journey that weaves in and out of time and place, reality and fantasy. Written by one of Ireland’s leading writers in the Irish language, this is an ode to theatre, and a heartfelt love song to one of Ireland’s theatre legends. This production is also a spiritual home-coming for Mac Liammoir; the first artistic director of An Taibhdhearc.
As Gaeilge:
Ar oíche dhorcha, stopann an seod aosta, Mac Liammóir, do phléisiúr beag. Diúltaíonn Garda óg é agus tugann sé abhaile é slán sábhailte… ach tá stoirm ag teacht. Is dráma osréalach é ‘Wáltsáil Abhaile’ faoi shaol Micheál Mac Liammóir; aisteoir, stiúrthóir, léirithóir amharclainne agus seod i stair na drámaíochta. Agus é anonn in aois, téann ‘Mac’ ar aistear dochreidte, ag coradh agus ag casadh tríd am ‘is áit, fírinne ‘is fantaisíocht. Scríofa ag ceann de mhórscríbhneoirí na Gaeilge, Antoine Ó Flathartha, in ómós don dhrámaíocht agus do laoch mór na Taibhdheirce. Níl bealach níos fearr le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar shaol agus shaothar an chéad stiúrthóir ealaíne sa Taibhdhearc.
