Here we go with our live music gig guide! It’s the weekend in Galway and so much is happening in this wonderful city of the Tribes. So grab a cuppa, sit down and have a scroll through just some of the events on offer this weekend. From the eclectic Westend, to the Latin Quarter and all the way to Eyre Square and beyond, we’ve got you covered.

Friday August 19th
Róisín Dubh:
9pm: New Ceremony: For Friday night frolics and a bit of wildness, join New Ceremony and guests at the Róisín Dubh in Galway’s Westend. Renowned for their late night music, this venue never disappoints. Expect an eclectic mix of genres from one of the city’s favourite venues.
An Pucan:
7-9pm: Back The West: Just off Eyre Square in the heart of Galway city, An Pucan comes alive this weekend with a mix of great bands and DJs. From 7pm onwards enjoy the popular sounds of Back The West.
10pm-12am: Tightrope: Afterwards, the acclaimed Tightrope will have you bopping the night away before DJ Trev takes over until 2am.
Monroe’s Tavern:
4:30pm: The West Sessions: Pull up a seat and join this week’s special guest, the world renowned Sharon Shannon and friends for the best of the West Sessions at Monroe’s Tavern. This is a fantastic opportunity to catch the ‘Blackbird’ musician in full flight at a traditional Irish celebration of music and song.
Above all it’s absolutely free! In essence, a Sharon Shannon gig sells out around the globe. Luckily, we have her on our doorstep at Monroe’s Tavern.
What’s more, the comfortable surrounds are the perfect backdrop to hear the toe-tapping beats of an impromptu get together. This is where reels and jigs fill the room with melody and mayhem and spill out into the city streets. Arrive early as this is set to pack the rafters at the famous venue.
10pm: Luna: As the night rolls, on, Luna will bring more tunes to the stage with her lyrical stylings at Monroe’s Tavern. Come for the food and stay for the craic.
Monroe’s Live:
11pm: Urban Friday: If the West Sessions and Luna have you in the zone, the party continues upstairs at Monroe’s Live. Yes this one-stop social venue has it all. From international trad stars in Monroe’s Tavern to the award winning live music venue upstairs, you don’t have to go far to let the late night roll in.
Here, in the back stage venue, it’s time for Urban Friday. In this regard, DJ BlazeHitta and Dj Ozz G bring the finest of reggaeton, dancehall, brasilian, spanish, hiphop and afrobeat tunes! Free entry before 11:30pm / €10 after.
Saturday August 20th
Róisín Dubh:
8pm: The Dirty Circus: It’s time to get down and dirty with the wild and fabulous The Dirty Circus at the Róisín Dubh in Galway’s Westend. This stylish burlesque and cabaret show will keep you hot under the collar this Saturday.
Bar 1520:
9pm: John Gaughan: Bar 1520 on Quay Street brings the musical stylings of John Gaughan to the stage this Saturday at this warm and welcoming venue in Galway’s Latin Quarter.
An Pucan:
10pm-12pm: The Shambollixes will bring their trad take on popular tunes to An Pucan just off Eyre Square in Galway city. Expect a night of exciting rhythm and song. Here’s a link to a little taster of their music to whet your appetite: The Shambollixes. Afterwards enjoy the late night beats of DJ Trev from 12pm-2am.
Monroe’s Live:
11pm: Gift Horse
Monroe’s Live in Galway’s Westend are set to bring the very best of musical talent to the stage once again at their late night venue. As always, Monroe’s Live are the beating heart of any Galway gig guide. Taking to the main stage from 11pm are Gift Horse – from the streets to the stage. Free entry before midnight / €10 afterwards.
10:30pm: Will Softly
Alternatively, enjoy DJ legend Will Softly. Will has gained a strong following over the years and his popularity is testament to his talent. Enjoy as he brings the best tunes to the back stage at Monroe’s Live. Free entry before midnight / €10 afterwards.
The Kings Head:
10:30pm: Pyramid: Where would we be without Pyramid, a band who are guaranteed to entertain night after night. In essence, the name alone is synonymous with great music, song and rousing nights out. A staple on the music scene in Galway, catch them in action at the historic King’s Head in the city’s Latin Quarter.
Sunday August 21st
An Pucan:
6pm-8pm: Junior B’s: Around the corner from Eyre Square you will discover the rhythmic sounds of Junior B’s at An Pucan. Moreover, this venue guarantees a night of good music and a great Sunday evening experience. Popular amongst locals and tourists alike, this city centre bar is guaranteed to make memories as a fun and exciting meeting place.
9pm-11pm: MacDara: Let the Sunday evening entertainment continue at An Pucan with MacDara.
Bar 1520:
9pm: Trad Music: For a more relaxing vibe this Sunday night, ease your way out of the weekend with a trad music session at bar 1520 in Galway’s Latin Quarter.
Monroe’s Tavern:
1pm-3pm: The Galway Bay Jazz Band: What better way to enjoy an afternoon’s entertainment than with the Galway Bay Jazz Band. This free gig at Monroe’s Tavern in Galway’s Westend is guaranteed to take you back in time to the best of swing and jazz music. In line with this, expect dancing, laughter and song as this talented band bring a modern twist to songs from a bygone age. Without doubt, this is fast becoming a favourite on the Scene in Galway music calendar.
Róisín Dubh:
11pm: John Conneely Inc. A Galway city weekend and gig guide is not complete without the amazing John Conneely Inc. This late night show is the hottest ticket in town from the king of swing. From modern to jazz, John Conneely and his crew are a city highlight and not to be missed. They bring the house down time and time again. Ultimately, his unique tones are complemented by the jazzy ensemble of talented musicians. Together with special guests, this band are the ultimate Galway experience. Once again, the Róisín Dubh comes up trumps with their weekend line-up.
